SEO - Getting Started
If you’re anything like most people getting started, you’ve probably created a brand new website, hoping that the search engines will happen by and just love your site and hoped that people would mysteriously show up at your site and buy whatever it is you were selling.
After a couple of weeks go by and only a few stragglers show up at your website. After continuing your research, you decide to try and “optimize” your website around your main keyword in hopes that you just might rank well in 1 of the millions of search engines.
Another couple of weeks go by and still no luck.
At this point you probably give up and decide to either build another website around a different target market or just lose all hope and quit.
Well, here’s a news flash for you, as you’ve probably figured out by now, this is not the way to go about doing things.
Let me give you a specific example of what your very first steps MUST be when creating any website.
Before we get into the details of SEO, let’s back up a step and talk about giving our eventual SEO work a fighting chance.
The idea behind our website endeavor is to make make money… and in order to that you’ve got to spend some quality time doing your keyword research.
Let’s take weight loss as an example. As you would guess, this is a huge market. It is inhabited by some very strong power hitters in the online game.
In our example we figure well sell an eBook or two and promote a couple quality affiliate partners. But if we head off building our site around the keyword ‘weigh loss’ … we’ll be in for long dry spell.
In our example you would never start out trying to optimize your page for ‘weight loss’.
Let’s take a quick peek at Google so I can show you exactly how many websites are competing for this keyword. If we go to Google and enter “weight loss”, you’ll see there are almost 2.7 million web pages competing for this keyword phrase!
By the end of this course you’ll be able to better take on the big time keywords, but when you are just getting started with your website, the goal is to get some air under your wings and experience some type of success… and grow from there.

In order to give yourself your best chance at success, keyword research is at the core. Since beginning in my online business I have used Wordtracker and KeywordElite.
Wordtracker is a subscription service and has long been the industry standard in keyword research. If you’ve not seen or used Wordtracker before, here is a link to their free guide.
As for desktop applications, for my money Keywordelite is the way to go. I’ve used it for years, and can tell you this software is directly responsible for much of my online financial success with the websites I’ve developed.
So, take a step back from your rush to get a website out amongst the crowd… give yourself your best chance and do your keyword research first… the work you do on the front end will pay off much better for you on the back end.
